The first world war broke out in 1914, and the then British Empire had declared war with the Ottoman Empire (now Germany). The Australian government along with New Zealand government, who at the time was very much inline with the British empire, was immediately getting involved and become a valuable ally.
One of the war campaign to weaken the Germans was planned to set foot in Gallipoli penisula of Turkey, who at the time was a german ally.
So, on the 25th April, 1915, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps also known as the ANZAC, had landed on the beach of Gallipoli.
However, the landing turned out to be a disaster in Australia first major military involvement. Where the army was landed at the wrong end of the island and had to climp steep cliffs and dug in. Due to other circumstances such as lack of planning and cohesiveness with the British army, the fight lasted 8 months long on the island.
At the end, the Gallipoli campaign had caused the life of more than 8,000 Australian soldiers.
Although the Gallipoli campaign failed in its military objectives, the Australian and New Zealand actions during the campaign left us all a powerful legacy. The creation of what became known as the “ANZAC legend” became an important part of the identity of both nations, shaping the ways they viewed both their past and their future.
